Q&A with a new British tech startup Multiview Media

0
0

Having just launched, British tech startup Multiview Media is introducing its multi-angle streaming platform to the music industry and beyond. Its new interactive and innovative technology lets fans be their own director with the ability to allow users to choose what angle to watch when viewing a concert or event. We quizzed Ray Meaham, CEO and Founder of Multiview Media, on the launch of the startup and what lies ahead.

What is Multiview Media?

Multiview Media is a newly founded British tech startup which has built a white-label technology platform to enable content owners to stream historic video content or live events in a multi-camera angle format. Letting the fan be their own director, this new and innovative technology will allow for a much more interactive experience when watching either live events or historic content.

Being a white-label solution, Multiview Media’s player can be embedded within third-party sites offering a direct to fan route. Artists, events and other content creators can utilise the tech’s player to showcase to their viewers the option to choose a camera angle they’d prefer viewing from.

Why did you create the platform?

I developed the idea for Multiview Media while being a music manager myself. I was looking to increase the revenues of my roster and thought, “why not explore live streams in a multi-angle format which could open up new commercial opportunities?”. Over the last few years, I have collaborated with key people during the development stages of Multiview Media, including major label artists, artist managers and festival promoters. We have been working together on bringing the idea to market. In that time, we have made several iterations of the product and our offering thanks to feedback from all our early supporters and backers – which range from music management, music industry professionals and artists.

How does tech work?

Content owners provide Multiview Media with live or historic video content, which is then placed into Multiview Media’s encoder software. This is then converted into a digital form that can be streamed in multi-camera angle formats via Multiview Media’s platform (or player embedded in their site). Using auto-detection technology, Multiview Media is able to predict when a viewer is about to select a specific camera angle, at which point the stream is upgraded to a higher quality, ensuring that the change between camera angles is smooth and seamless.

What are the benefits of multi-angle streaming over single-angle streaming?

Since launching this year and working with our first partner event, JBTV Festival, we’ve seen much longer fan engagement with the use of multi-angle streaming over a single-angle offering. The result has been 20 per cent longer fan engagement which is a benefit for any content creator, artist or event meaning that not only is the audience captured but they are spending more time viewing the content.

Letting the fan be the director offers up the opportunity to customise their viewing experience. During a time when engagement with digital streams has increased because of the pandemic, viewers are demanding more in regards to a more immersive experience, but also more interactivity over their viewing options. Multi-angle streaming does this.

What’s the USP of the tech?

The tech player offers a very flexible option to be embedded into third-party sites. It can be branded up to what is preferred by the content creator, something which isn’t available by other tech providers. Our first event showcased a 20 per cent longer fan engagement experience over single-angle viewing. By empowering the fan to be their own director and provide interactive content, engagement with the viewer is fully benefitted.

Other USPs of the tech is that there is a complete, new workflow from camera to player – a very seamless process to deliver a multi-angle viewing experience. The workflow is tried and tested, making it very easy to set up new streams for content creators. It also opens up new revenue streams for the content creators, such as being able to provide advertising opportunities for brands. Logos, content and much more can be integrated into these spaces via augmented reality. Not only that, but data analytics can help refine the strategic approach to any campaign by the content creator. Want to know which band member is most watched, the analytics will show which camera angle is most viewed.

What are the ambitions for Multiview Media?

We have bold ambitions for the company but as a startup we are very much focused on our go-to market phase, after a few years of developing and refining our tech. However, the goal remains the same to become a market leader in multi-angle content delivery across music, sport, e-sports, education and other relevant sectors – all powered by Multiview Media. We built the tech with the fan in mind, to provide an affordable, accessible and interactive platform which fans can enjoy as part of their viewing experience.

Get ready to battle – The Evercade VS has been announced

0
0

Evercade have announced the VS, a new, compact home console that works in conjunction with their current library.

A refreshingly old school design mirrors the design of the original Evercade yet whilst the original encouraged solo play, the VS focuses on playing together. Think back to those moments in front or the TV with a Nintendo or Sega doing battle with your pal or sibling.

This does quite end at simple battles, there are four USB sockets on the front, meaning four player action will occur without the need for extra adapters, just additional controllers.

In a welcome move Evercade VS uses the same cartridge system as Evercade Handheld allowing for compatibility with the extensive library already available. Additionally, inside the machine there is a second cartridge slot and the mind boggles at the potential.

Under the hood, the Evercade VS runs a Quad Core 1.5 Ghz processor and outputs at 1080p Full HD resolution. A new addition to Evercade is WiFi to allow firmware updates and operational improvements. Additionally, Evercade mention in the launch material that the WiFi can be used to receive games, however no storage options have been listed at this time. Might an online store be around the corner? Unlikely, as Evercade is a collector’s console.

Capture the Solar Eclipse with Sony

0
0

The moon with detail of its craters along the terminator (the area where light falls to shade) captured using the Sony α7Rii camera with the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS lens

From the striking annual solar eclipse on June 10th to the strawberry supermoon on June 24th, this summer is set to have some spectacular night skies that budding astrophotography enthusiasts won’t want to miss.

To help you capture striking and vivid images of the glowing moon, dazzling meteor showers, and shooting stars, Sony has partnered with renowned astro-photographer Andrew Whyte. Andrew offers guidance on the astronomical delights on display this year, plus gives insider tips on positioning, equipment and style to help you capture the perfect shot. Andrew Whyte’s stunning photo series has been shot using an array of Sony kit, including the α7Rii camera and the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS lens.

Top 5 astronomical moments to be ‘camera ready’ for in 2021

  1. The Annular Solar Eclipse (June 10th) – This occurs when the Moon is too far away from the Earth to completely cover the Sun resulting in a ring of light around the darkened Moon. Remember, it is important you never look directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse.
  2. The Supermoon (June 24th) – The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated; head to a location where you’re able to capture it in all its glory.
  3. The New Moon (July 10th) – The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.
  4. Perseids Meteor Shower (August 12th-13th) – The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight.

Guidance on capturing spectacular stargazing events

Photographer Andrew Whyte offers astrophotography advice to help you capture this year’s out of this world delights.

Andrew Whyte said: “As more people have reconnected with nature and the world around them during recent months, interest in the sky at night is soaring, proving that you don’t need to be an expert astronomer or pro photographer to enjoy viewing the moon and stars. I’ve been shooting astrophotography for more than 10 years and whilst not much has changed in the night sky during that time, the technology I use has moved on significantly.”

“Sony has been at the forefront of those advances with a large and growing range of cameras & lenses that are ideally suited to low light conditions, making it more accessible than ever to capture incredible images of our universe at night. If you’re keen to explore this for yourself, my tips will give you a head start.”

Top astrophotography tips from seasoned professional, Andrew Whyte:

  1. Choose an appropriate location. Somewhere away from immediate street lighting is ideal, whether that’s a garden, local park or further afield. Choosing a subject for your photo like a lone tree, deserted skatepark or an old building will give your sky some context and connection with Earth.
  2. Think about the image you want to end up with. To shoot pinpricks of starlight, the milky way or star trails, a wide-angle lens is your friend. To capture the moon rising or setting against a distant landmark, you’ll want the greater reach of a telephoto lens. Whichever style you’re shooting, you’ll need a sturdy tripod to keep your camera absolutely stable & still- movement or vibration can ruin a long exposure image.
  3. Switch to manual mode if possible. As you’re heading to a dark location you’ll want a camera that’s easy to use. With intuitive dials & menus and a touchscreen that can also flip out and rotate, the α7Siii makes it as simple as possible to compose and set up for your shots, whilst its uprated battery promises the longest possible usage time between changes.
  4. Make sure your subject is in focus. It’s horrible to arrive home after an hour in the cold & dark night only to discover your images are blurred! The α7Siii features the most impressive autofocus system I’ve ever used, working reliably under moonlight conditions. For those occasions when I choose to focus manually, the camera’s digital viewfinder has tricks up its sleeve to magnify the subject and confirm when its sharp.
  5. Check your results. Look for a crisp subject and inspect the corners of your image to be sure the stars still look like stars. Sony’s range of prime and zoom lenses never fail to impress me, retaining definition and clarity all the way to the extremes of the image.
  6. Travel light. Shooting at night needs more equipment than in daylight- things like tripods, torch, spare camera batteries (and maybe even a flask of tea) all add bulk to your kit, so look to save weight elsewhere. The entire α7 range is compact without compromising on power, whilst the new α7C has redefined my expectation of a full-frame camera in a diminutive form.
  7. Be different. Sure, the wide apertures of Sony’s range of prime lenses are useful for capturing all available light but they can be a creative asset in their own right. Pick of the bunch for both light and creativity has to be the recently launched FE 50mm F1.2 G Master. With a wide aperture of f/1.2 it can gather more than four times as much light as many other prime lenses whilst also offering the flexibility to shoot evocative night-time portraits with the night sky beautifully blurred behind.

Inside Andrew Whyte’s camera bag:

α7S III Camera (RRP: £3,800 / €4,200)

For low-light shooting, the new 35mm full-frame 12.1MP back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor reduces rolling shutter by up to three times and utilises a variety of advanced light-gathering techniques to ensure high-sensitivity with low noise, without the need for large-scale lighting setups. Perfect for the ever-changing surrounding light of the eclipse, without the hassle.

  • Featuring newly developed BIONX XR™ image processing, for supreme image performance
  • Outstanding video recording capabilities, ultra-high sensitivity and a fast hybrid AF system
  • No need for a lighting rig, thanks to the back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor
  • Completely redesigned menu system

α7C Camera (£1,900 / 2,100)

For those needing to travel a little further to get the best shot, the Alpha 7C is the world’s smallest and lightest full-frame body with uncompromising performance, featuring advanced AF (autofocus), high-resolution 4K video capabilities and more.

  • Powerful BIONZ X™ image processing for spectacular image quality
  • The large pixel size ensures the camera takes beautiful images even in dimly lit situations

FE 50mm F2.5 G, FE 40mm F2.5 G, FE 24mm F2.8 (£630 / 700 each)

All three lenses deliver high image quality and beautiful bokeh in a lightweight and compact design. Perfect for photographers and videographers alike who strive for standout shots and easy mobility, so you can carry your kit to viewpoints with the best vantage for those skyline shots.

  • Pair with a Sony full-frame camera or APS-C
  • Boast high resolution, intuitive operability and fast, precise, and quiet autofocus capabilities.

Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM lens (£2,100 / €2,300)

The lens’s maximum F1.2 aperture combines an impressive shallow depth of field for maximum creative expression with incredible light gathering capabilities, allowing for faster shutter speeds and lower ISO in low light settings. Every image of the night sky will be as impressive as the last, without the varying light disrupting the content.

  • Focus hold buttons and other features support professional shooting needs
  • XD Linear Motors offers excellent response and low vibration for fast and precise AutoFocus

Ian Barton on Clonezilla
If you do get a 1TB Drive Ted you can use Clonezilla. I have used this several times for moving Linux to new drives. It does support Windows 10 too. The only downside is it has so many different options. You need to read the instructions carefully before starting. It’s almost impossible to destroy your original drive (unless you try to restore your new blank drive onto your original Windows drive)! It’s open source and free.

Jeremy Harpham on Starlink Internet (context: last week’s heat cut-out on dish)
I have a friend who uses this. He lives in Haslemere, Surrey, but he is limited to just variable BT Internet with a max speed of 32Mbps down and 2-3Mbps up. He looked at 5G but not available in his area yet. Starlink costs him approx £90 per month. It delivers speeds consistently in the 80Mbps – 170Mbps range – and this is improving as Starlink adds more satellites. He does get dropouts of 3-6 seconds at times, now and then. The Starlink dish is mounted on his chimney and is slightly bigger than a Sky dish. It is motorised for tracking the satellites and heated to clear snow and ice. He’s not had any overheating issues, but could see that might happen on a hot 30C+ day in direct sunlight.
SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet could achieve global coverage by September

Evercade and Stadia update from Ted

——————–

Chad Dixon

Good show guys! A few questions for Gareth Myles…

  1. Do you notice that using a Bluetooth games controller improves your reaction times than just playing on the phone screen?
  2. What other benefits of using one do you think is worth mentioning? (I’m specifically thinking of first person shooter titles.)
  3. Which compatible smartphone games controller would you recommend that’s under £50?
